Alamos Upsets in Mountain Top Derby Today at Ruidoso Downs

(Ruidoso Downs, NM) Alamos and jockey Mauro Salcedo came from sixth place in the stretch for a come-from-behind victory in the finals of the $200,000 Mountain Top Derby for three-year-old New Mexico-bred quarter horses on Saturday at Ruidoso Downs Racetrack.
The gelding went off at 11-1 odds and paid backers $24.20, $9.40 and $7.00 winning in a time of 17.458 seconds for 350-yards, finishing ahead of Eye for Cambria and jockey Ricky Ramirez by a half-length.
It was a first stakes victory for Alamos who is trained by Tony Sedillo for Tungsten Racing and Marcelino Gonzalez. Alamos is sired by Eye Am King out of the mare Anakena by Woodbridge.
In the finals of the $100,000 Ruidoso Maiden Stakes, Real Runaway Rime and jockey Jacob Enriquez was the 22-1 upset winner paying $46.60, $12.80 and $8.00. The gelding won by three-quarters of a length over Paradise Pete and jockey Luis Martinez.
Real Runaway Rime scored a second career win in a time of 17.497 seconds for 350-yards for trainer Ismael Villalobos and owners Israel and Enrique Bordier. The three-year-old gelding is sired by Rime Chimes out of the mare Runaway Leonarda by Jesse James Jr.
Meanwhile, KJ Desparado, the all-time leader in quarter horse earnings, was an easy winner of a $32,400 allowance race today. The six-year-old gelding won the seventh race by a length-and-three-quarters in a time of 17.365 seconds for 350-yards with jockey Emilio Tapia on board.
The 2021 All American Futurity champion, KJ Desparado is approaching $3.4 million in total earnings with 18 career wins for owners John and Kathy Lee and Reuben Mares, and trainer Wes Giles.
KJ Desparado is sired by Apollitical Jess out of the mare Tres Veses by Tres Seis.
