REVENANT MOON SETS THE BAR HIGH IN THE FIRST RACE ON DAY 2 OF RUIDOSO FUTURITY TRIALS

TRAINER TREY WOOD QUALIFIES TWO & WINS FIVE

On Day 2 of the Ruidoso Futurity trials, Revenant Moon ran a near flawless race in the first trial heat and covered the 350 yards in :17.462. That time stood the test of 15 more trial heats to become the fastest qualifying time of Day 2, and the third-fastest time over two days. The filly’s trainer Trey Wood also had a banner day, qualifying two horses for the Ruidoso Futurity final on June 13 and winning five races on the day. The track was fast, and the wind shifted from race to race on a mostly sunny day.

With a stellar bloodline by A Revenant out of Sochi Moon by Fdd Dynasty, Revenant Moon is owned by Robert Odom, Scott Bryant, and Norman Allen. She was bred in New Mexico by Dosi and Norma Alvarez and was purchased at the 2020 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale for $20,000. The race was never in question as she broke cleanly and won the race by 4 ¾-lengths going away.

“She’s just professional. She runs straight from the gate to the finish line every time and that’s all you can ask her to do. She’s a blessing to our family - not easy to train - but a blessing to have in the barn,” said trainer Wood. “She has some quirks about her only because she’s young and learning, but that’s minor compared to her potential.”

Jockey Jose Alvarez was aboard for the win today. The race-time favorite, Revenant Moon paid $2.60 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show.

The second-fasted qualifier, Kj Desparado, won the 4th race by 2 ¼-lengths and posted a time of :17.499. Owned by John and Kathy Lee and Ruben Mares, the brown gelding comes from the barn of Wesley Giles and was ridden by Adrian Ramos.

“He’s a home-bred from the owner’s ranch in Arizona, and we liked him from the beginning,” said trainer Giles. “We thought he was one of our better chances in the trials, and it turned out to be true. This horse got into trouble in the stakes final but showed some courage. We think he’s talented.”

He was bred by LL Land & Cattle in Arizona. He went off at 2-1 and paid $6.60, $3.60 and $2.40.

Vee Aye Pea was the lone qualifier that came out of a race after the 6th race. Running in the 12th trial heat, Vee Aye Pea crossed the finish line in:17.500, besting the rest by 2 ½-lengths. The sorrel filly is owned by Licon Farm and Ranch, LLC and was purchased at the 2020 Heritage Place September Yearling Sale for $65,000. She is trained by Jorge Morales-Flores and was ridden by Sergio Becerra. Vee Aye Pea, bred in Texas by Bobby Cox, went off at 6-1 and paid $14.80, $7.00, and$3.60.

The fourth-fastest qualifier was Favorite Blues Man who came out of the 5th race with a time of :17.538. Owned by La Feliz Montana Ranch LLC, the black gelding by Favorite Cartel out of Amore La Blue by Mr Jess Perry was bred in California by the Lucky Seven Ranch. He is trained by Manuel Rodriguez and had Federico Martinez up for the win. The race-time favorite won by ½-length and paid $4.20, $3.40 and $2.40.

The final qualifier of the day and Wood’s second qualifier was Tactical Fire who won the 6th race by ¾-length with a time of :17.596. The gray gelding by Walk Thru Fire out of Ynot Bar by Chicks Beduino was bred in California by Steve Burns DVM. He was purchased at the 2020 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale for $70,000 and was ridden by jockey Tanner Thedford who notched four wins today. Tactical Fire went off at 6-1 and paid $14.00, $5.40 and $2.80.

The full field for the Grade 1, $1 Ruidoso Futurity includes Jess Fire Me (:17.420), Jess Savin Candy (:17.430), Revenant Moon (:17.462), Kj Desparado (:17.499), Vee Aye Pea (:17.500), Favorite Blues Man (:17.538), Lethal Jet (:17.573), Mr Apollo Jess (:17.590), Apollitical J Legacy (:17.594), and Tactical Fire (:17.596).

The full field for the $100,000 Ruidoso Juvenile include Fdd Scout (:17.606), Spanish Steps (:17.617), Cell Bounce (:17.621), Strong Soul (:17.626), Rainbow to Roses (:17.637), Jam Candy (:17.7642), Ironey (:17.692), Mi Bella Valentina (:17.706), Eagle Tempted Dash (:17.715), and Woman in Gold (:17.717).

Trials racing action continues tomorrow with the Grade 1, $850,000 (est.) Ruidoso Derby trials where 90 3-year-olds will compete in 10 trial heats at 400-yards for a shot at the finals which will be run on June 12. On Monday, the first stakes racing action takes place on the track as Quarter Horses that are 3-years-and-up compete in the John Andreini Memorial Stakes at 350-yards.
