Weekend Wrap-Up by Mike Ahrens: August 14 - 16, 2020
The Rio Grande Senorita and Rio Grande Senor were the highlights of this Sunday card and trainer Todd Fincher took home the top prize in both. Comic Hot Toddy dueled outside a rival through pretty quick opening fractions of 21.75 and 44.50 then took charge and drew away under jockey Shane Laviolette to cover five-and-one-half furlongs in 1.03.97 for the Senorita restricted to fillies.
"I liked drawing outside of the speed," said Fincher of her post position being outside of Bully Baby with whom she dueled and who tired to be third. Comic Hot Toddy "acts like her mother. Nothing impressive at all in the mornings but fires on race day. Both were all speed."
In the male division, the Senor, Delbert Too got a good stalking trip off dueling leaders, moved outside them to take the lead in upper stretch, drew clear and held off a late charge from stablemate Digger's Gold. "I've liked him all along," Fincher said of the lightly-raced son of Marking who is now two for two lifetime, while
noting that he really likes this sire's offspring in general. This may be one to keep an eye on in future New Mexico-bred stakes.
